Mainz Science Declaration
Part of the Curious2024 – Future Insight Conference was the “Mainz Science Declaration”, which was signed by Science Minister Hoch and Mayor Haase. This initiative calls on all nations, societies and organizations to make more resources available for the promotion of science and technology in order to combat diseases, ensure sufficient food for the world’s population and stop the destruction of the environment.

Start-up Fair
The Startup Fair, a highlight of the Curious2024 – Future Insight Conference, showcased the most inventive startups from both the local and international startup ecosystems. This premier event offered a vibrant platform for startups specializing in biotechnology, healthcare, lifestyle & wellness, smart industry, smart lab solutions, and agriculture, among others. It convenes brilliant minds, pioneering entrepreneurs, and influential industry leaders to foster collaborations that drive technological and innovative advancements. The fair provided startups with a unique opportunity to present their groundbreaking ideas, network with industry veterans, and compete for essential resources, thereby empowering a new generation of innovators and visionaries to achieve success and make a significant impact in their fields.
Awards 2024
Awarded for the first time in 2019, the Future Insight Prize will be presented annually for the next 35 years to honor outstanding achievements in science and technology towards groundbreaking innovations in the areas of health, nutrition, and energy.
The prize will come with a targeted up to 1,000,000 EUR research grant to the winner.
The awarding for the 2024 Future Insight™ Prize will be given during the Curious – Future Insight Conference.
Science in Shorts
Science plays a vital role in our society yet more often than not, its true impact and value can be hard to communicate, see or understand. Distilling complex theories, data and experiments, into easily accessible points is challenging.
Science in Shorts, a new competition from Nature Awards and Springer Nature in partnership with Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, encourages scientists to enhance the accessibility of their research through short, creative videos that highlight the importance of their work and engage the public with science.
Designed to break down the walls around science and capture the attention of the public, applicants were asked to produce a 60-second video to present their research – the more engaging and creative the better. The best of these videos will be made available on nature.com and on YouTube. The shortlist will be determined by a multidisciplinary team of editors, reporters, filmmakers, researchers and communications specialists from across the Nature Portfolio.
The Spinoff Prize
The Spinoff Prize has been established by Nature Awards in partnership with our platinum sponsor Merck to showcase and celebrate global excellence in the commercialization of academic research through the creation of spinoff companies. Research topics are Life Sciences & Physical Sciences.

Awarded for the first time in 2020, the Johann Anton Merck Award honors outstanding scientific preclinical research in the areas of Oncology and Autoimmunity.
On 9 July 2024 at 18:30, a Science Slam was planned for the people of Mainz and interested guests of Curious. Selected young scientists from Mainz research institutions presented their research in 10 minutes in an exciting and funny way. The scientists, who were selected by a jury, received training beforehand. The winner of the Slam was invited to present his or her project in an Ignite session at Curious.
The ScienceFluencer award has been established by Gesellschaft für Biochemie und Molekularbiologie in partnership with Merck to promote science communication.
To promote science communication, the ScienceFluencer award honors the work of young scientists (students, doctoral candidates, postdocs) from the life sciences which present scientific content to the public. With this award we intend to create a bridge between scientific societies, industry, universities and people interested in science.

Teilnehmen dürfen alle Schülerinnen und Schüler der Klassenstufen 3 – 7 aller Schulen in Rheinland-Pfalz.
Die Bilder werden begutachtet und die besten 10 werden hier auf unseren Webseiten sowie Social-Media-Kanälen veröffentlicht, wo über die besten Einreichungen abgestimmt wird. Die drei Bilder mit den meisten Likes und Shares gewinnen.
- Die besten Bilder werden am 10-11. July auf der Curious2024 – Future Insight™ Konferenz ausgestellt.
- Die drei Gewinnerinnen und Gewinner der Abstimmung werden mit bis zu zwei zusätzlichen Familienmitgliedern oder Freunden eingeladen, einen Nachmittag der Wissenschaft mit uns in Mainz zu verbringen.
- Die Gewinnerin oder der Gewinner der Abstimmung wird zu einem Besuch des Instituts für Biotechnologie und Wirkstoff-Forschung (IBWF) in Mainz gemeinsam mit dem Landeskoordinator für Biotechnologie Prof. Dr. Eckhard Thines eingeladen (1 Vormittag für die Schulklasse der Gewinnerin/des Gewinners).
- Außerdem werden attraktive Buchpreise unter allen Teilnehmenden verlost.
Träger des Wettbewerbes ist der Future Insight e.V. mit Unterstützung des Ministeriums für Wissenschaft und Gesundheit des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz und der Landeshauptstadt Mainz.
Schirmherrin ist die Ministerin für Bildung des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz.
