She is also a Fellow of the LOEWE Center for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO), an associated faculty member of the Chemistry Faculty at the University of Marburg and serves as the vice-spokesperson for a DFG-funded Research Training Group 2937. Katharina received her Ph.D. in 2017 and her Master of Science in Molecular Biotechnology in 2012, both from Heidelberg University, Germany. She is a biotechnologist well known for her pioneering discovery and functional characterization of NAD-capped RNAs in bacteria and bacteriophages. Her research focuses on the discovery and mechanistic characterization of RNA modifications in these organisms. Katharina has received numerous awards for her research on the bacterial epitranscriptome, including the Otto-Meyerhof Award in 2024. She was also recognized as a “Rising Star in Microbiology” by the European Academy of Microbiology. In 2023, she received an ERC Starter Grant to investigate RNA modifications and their applications in RNA-based therapeutics.
