Kai Beckmann

CEO of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany

Kai Beckmann became the Chairman of the Executive Board and Group CEO of Merck, KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, on May 1, 2026. He is a business leader with more than 30 years of experience at the intersection of technology, industry, and global enterprise. Since joining the company in 1989, he has held multiple roles with increasing levels of responsibility. He became a member of the Executive Board in 2011 and was appointed Deputy Chairman in 2025. Over his 15 years on the Executive Board, he helped shape Merck’s strategic direction and supported its long-term development as a leading global science and technology company. Prior to becoming Group CEO, Kai Beckmann served as CEO of Merck’s electronics business from 2017 to 2026, leading its transformation into a focused Electronics sector and strengthening its role as a trusted partner to the global semiconductor industry, including through strategic acquisitions and deepened customer relationships. Earlier, he served as Chief Administration Officer of Merck from 2011 to 2017, overseeing key Group functions including Human Resources, Business Technology, and site operations at Merck’s global headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. From 2007 to 2011, he was Chief Information Officer, and from 2004 to 2007 he served as Managing Director of Merck in Singapore and Malaysia, gaining international leadership experience. Beyond Merck, Kai Beckmann has held several external roles. He was a member of the Supervisory Board of Bundesdruckerei from 2016 and served as its Chairman from 2023 to May 2026. From 2017 to 2025, he served as Vice President of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA). In addition, he was President of the German Federation of Chemical Employers’ Associations (BAVC) from 2017 to 2024. Kai Beckmann was born in 1965 in Hanau, Germany. He holds a master’s degree in computer science and a doctorate in economics from the Technical University of Darmstadt.
