Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte

The Salk Institute

Born on December 16, 1960 in Hellin, Spain. Obtained M.Sc., University of Valencia, Spain 1985 and Ph.D. University of Bologna, Italy and University of Valencia, Spain 1987. Did postdoctoral studies at EMBL and UCLA. Since 1993 is a Professor at The Salk Institute.His background is in developmental biology and he has spearheaded the regenerative medicine field with key discoveries including:Dedifferentiation and epigenetic modifications that allow for organ regeneration.Novel pluripotent/progenitor cell states that may allow for generation of human organs.Prevention and treatment of nuclear and mitochondrial monogenic diseases.Novel drivers and stem cell models of human aging.
